Description
This homemade honey mustard recipe is the only one you will ever need. Sweet, tangy, and perfectly creamy, it comes together in 5 minutes with 5 pantry staples. Use it as a dipping sauce, salad dressing, or marinade for chicken and salmon. Once you make it from scratch, you will never reach for the bottle again.
Ingredients
1/3 cup Dijon mustard
1/4 cup honey
1/4 cup mayonnaise, full-fat
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice (or white wine vinegar)
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional but recommended)
Instructions
1. Add the Dijon mustard, honey, mayonnaise, lemon juice, and cayenne pepper into a small mixing bowl.
2. Whisk all ingredients together until smooth, creamy, and glossy with no streaks remaining.
3. Taste and adjust: add more honey for sweetness, more lemon for tang, or more cayenne for depth.
4. Serve immediately or transfer to a clean glass jar and refrigerate for 2 hours before serving for best flavor.
5. Store in an airtight jar in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. Always use a clean spoon to keep it fresh.
Notes
Do not substitute Dijon mustard with yellow mustard. The texture and flavor balance will not be the same.
The sauce thickens as it chills. If it becomes too thick, whisk in a small splash of lemon juice to loosen it.
To turn this into a honey mustard vinaigrette dressing, whisk in 2 tablespoons olive oil and 1 extra tablespoon lemon juice.
Do not freeze this sauce. The mayonnaise base will separate and the texture cannot be recovered.
For a spicy version, add 1 teaspoon horseradish or increase cayenne to 1/2 teaspoon.
